SUMMARY:“Night in the Desert: An Ancient Monastic Ecology of Darkness.”
DESCRIPTION:“The hesychia of the night is enough for us if our thoughts are wakeful towards God.” This saying from the Apophthegmata Patrum suggests the importance of the night in early Christian monastic experience. This talk will consider the meaning of night in the desert as early Christian monks lived and imagined it. It will also ask how this ancient monastic “ecology of darkness” can help us recover a sense of the immense value of the night at a moment when the twenty-four-hour economy and unceasing light pollution are threatening to banish darkness completely from our world.” \nAbout the Speaker\nDouglas E. Christie\, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He is the author of The Word in The Desert: Scripture and the Quest for Holiness in Early Christian Monasticism (Oxford\, 1993)\, The Blue Sapphire of the Mind: Note for a Contemplative Ecology (Oxford\, 2012) and The Insurmountable Darkness of Love: Mysticism\, Loss and the Common Life (Oxford\, 2022). He has been awarded fellowships from the Luce Foundation\, the Lilly Foundation\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. From 2013 to 2015\, he served as Co-director of the Casa de la Mateada study abroad program in Córdoba\, Argentina\, a faith-based program rooted in the Jesuit vision of education for solidarity. He lives with his family in Los Angeles. \nIn-Person | To register please fill out the following form. \n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nMessage\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n \n \n Submit \n \n \n \nΔ\n \n\n

SUMMARY:HEI On the Road: Join Us at the 47th Biennial Clergy - Laity Congress
DESCRIPTION:Please stop by our booth\, attend a workshop\, or participate in a panel discussion. Below is a sample schedule of our participation in this groundbreaking event. We are looking forward to seeing you in San Diego! \nTuesday\, July 2\, 2024\nEcumenical Families: A Pastoral\, Theological and Canonical Approach \n\n\nPresented by: Rev. Dr. Patrick Viscuso\, Rev. Dr. Philip Halikias\, Dr. Despina Prassas\, Rev. Dr. John Chryssavgis\n\n \nThe mystery of marital unity in Christ speaks to the communion of faith. It has special pastoral\, canonical\, and theological meanings when related to the icon of marriage and family as the “little Church”\, according to the expression developed by Saint John Chrysostom. Many ecumenical families (couples from different Christian denominations)\, also known as mixed marriages\, call for a renewed compassionate\, and pastorally inspired approach. This panel discussion will focus on new pastoral\, canonical\, and theological responses to this common reality. In this regard\, the panelists will focus on the latest groundbreaking document published by the North American Orthodox–Catholic Theological Consultation: “The Pastoral Care of Mixed Marriages: Neither Yours or Mine – But Ours”. This panel will be offered in collaboration with the Huffington Ecumenical Institute at Hellenic College Holy Cross.\n\n \nWomen in Orthodoxy: Past\, Present\, and Future Roles \nPresented by: Rev. Dr. John Chryssavgis\, Dr. Elizabeth Prodromou Kyrou\, Dr. Helen Creticos Theodoropoulos\, Sara Tsugranis\, Kyra P. Limberakis (MTS)\, Dr. Cary J. Limberakis\n\n \nThe Church is the unity of the faithful gathered into one Body under the headship of Christ\, and all of her faithful\, men and women\, old and young\, share both personally and collectively in the vocation to be the Church. In what ways have women lived and are living this vocation to be the Church in the world? This panel will reflect on the needs and experiences of women today\, and examine the vital ways in which women have served historically\, the roles they undertake today\, and possible paths of future service\, covering philanthropic\, pastoral\, liturgical\, administrative\, and educational roles. The panel aims to educate\, listen\, and identify actions that will encourage organized and systematic support for the dynamic participation of women in the Church. \nWednesday\, July 3\, 2024\nNurturing Orthodox Christians through Accessible Education\, Publications\, and Spiritual Formation \n\n\nPresented by: Dr. Bruce Beck\n\n \nThe mission of HCHC is “the formation and education of the person within the life of an Orthodox Christian community.” Our vision is “to be the intellectual\, educational\, and spiritual formation center of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.” This presentation will highlight several recent innovative initiatives that invigorate our educational outreach to everyone who wants to learn\, bringing the good news to places where people live and work.\n\n \nFully Human: Toward Full Participation of People with Disabilities in the Orthodox Church (Link to Video)\n\n\nPresented by: Pres. Kerry Pappas\, Rev. Dr. John Chryssavgis\, Justin Heard\, Summer Kinard\n\n \nParticipants can expect an in-depth look at the efforts of the Fully Human ministry\, including those being made toward accessible worship for Deaf and blind persons\, how to create accessible Sunday School rooms and tailor educational materials for atypical learners\, and the vital importance of churches addressing physical access needs.\n\n \nPanelists will offer personal insight regarding their lived experience as caregivers and individuals with disabilities while emphasizing the theological connections related to the oneness of the Body of Christ and how the inclusion and valuing of people with varying abilities enhances the health and life of parishes. \nA significant portion of the session will be dedicated to an interactive Q&A session\, allowing attendees to engage with the panelists and delve deeper into the subject matter.

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence "Playing God?"
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence “Playing God?” | Theological\, Ethical & Pastoral Perspectives.\nIn 2014\, Elon Musk told a crowd at MIT “With AI we are summoning the demon“! Is such technological advancement an ally or an adversary? And is it moral\, amoral\, or immoral? Should the rapid emergence of AI be welcomed with cheer\, criticism\, or caution? If we can harness AI for the enrichment of biotechnology\, education\, and religion\, then what might be the ethical and practical repercussions for our communities and churches? Join us in a conversation with leading scientists\, bioethicists\, and theologians.  \nPanel Speakers:\nConstantinos Daskalakis is a Professor of Computer Science at MIT\, working on Algorithms\, Game Theory\, Economics\, Probability Theory\, and Machine Learning. SUMMARY:“O JERUSALEM\, JERUSALEM” (MT 23.37)
DESCRIPTION:THE CHRISTIANS OF PALESTINE\nAs horrific violence escalates in Israel and Palestine\, much of the public discourse has reduced the conflict to a binary world of Jews and Muslims.
